Results Percentage Based on Votes vs. Voters

December 24, 2024

At ElectionBuddy, we’ve traditionally presented voting results based on the total number of votes cast per question, rather than based on the number of unique voters. This distinction can have a significant impact on how results are presented, particularly in elections with multiple vacancies.

Many organizations have different requirements for how they calculate election results. For instance, we have seen churches, associations, or tribal councils require that candidates meet a certain percentage of votes based on the total number of voters, not just the total votes cast. Winners calculation based on voters is especially useful in board elections where multiple candidates are being chosen, where each candidate needs to achieve a minimum level of support from the actual voters, rather than simply a share of the total vote count. Other organizations, such as political parties may need the results in terms of votes cast as opposed to voters, as this shows the bigger picture of support for any candidate or option that is on the ballot.

To help clarify how this works, let's explore the difference with some practical examples.

Results Percentage Based on Votes

In this approach, the percentage is calculated based on the total number of votes cast for each candidate or option. In this example, since there are three vacancies, voters can cast up to 3 votes. If 5 voters participate and each casts 3 votes, the total number of votes would be 15. ElectionBuddy will calculate the percentage based on these 15 votes, providing a view of how each candidate performed relative to the total number of votes cast.

Results Percentage Based on Voters

Alternatively, results can be presented based on the number of voters, rather than the total votes cast. This method gives a different perspective on how each candidate performed relative to the actual number of participants in the election. If the same 5 voters each cast three votes, ElectionBuddy will base the percentage on the 5 voters rather than the total 15 votes cast. This approach helps organizations determine whether candidates are meeting the thresholds required by their rules, as the percentage reflects the participation level rather than the volume of votes cast.
